I was born in St Andrews, Scotland and my family moved to Australia when I was a child. I attended high school locally and have lived in the Macarthur area for forty years. I studied Chemistry at TAFE when I left school and my first full time job in 1984 was in the laboratory with a company called Pentex, part of the Ciba Geigy group at Lane Cove. Our company made custom colour and additive mixes and masterbatch for the plastics industry. During my time with the company, I worked as a colour matcher, laboratory manager, Technical Sales Rep and ultimately the Site Manager for what was by then known as Ciba Specialty Chemicals. During my time with Ciba, I studied trade certificate courses at the TAFE Plastics Skills Centre in plastics moulding, quality assurance as well as practical supervision.
Following a re-structure in 1999, I started in a completely different industry as a Production Manager for a soft furnishing company called St. Johns Furniture. We manufactured up to 100 lounge suites per day in the Minto factory. The timber was cut, high speed routed, frames produced, fabric cut, lounge covers sewn and lounge suites constructed and upholstered all on site. We installed production lines to make recliner chairs, instigated sophisticated bar code job routing and production systems and transported furniture all over Australia as well as internationally.
From furniture, I moved into the Insulation industry in 2003 where I worked as Production Manager and then Plant Manager for a company called Insulco which would become Fletcher Insulation. I worked in two sites in the manufacture of Polyester and then Glasswool Insulation. The Rooty Hill Glasswool plant was a 24/7 operation with world class uptime of over 98%.
Fletcher Insulation had an excellent training and development culture which allowed me to be involved in their Leadership Development Programme mini MBA program and finish my Graduate Certificate in Technology Management through Deakin University as well as the Graduate Diploma of Management through La Trobe University. I have since worked in operations management in the aluminium industry and have been the branch manager for a specialty steel supplier in the engineering industry.
I started with Impreglon in 2015 as the factory manager and it has been another steep learning curve. Every industry has it’s unique challenges and surface finishing is no different in that regard. The Impreglon team at Minto are a great group to work with and with a huge range of services and finishes on offer, there is a wealth of knowledge and experience to draw on both locally and from our overseas sister companies.
If you’d like to further discuss how I or any of Impreglon Australia’s other skilled staff can help you, why not get in touch?
